Relieve your dry eyes and experience more comfort

In the toggles below, we have provided everything you need to know about dry eye disease and how we can treat it

Eye dryness can affect anyone. It can be characterized by fluctuating blurred vision, mucus around the eyes, excessive tearing (like crying), red-eye or eye strain. Having dry eyes is sometimes painless, but most often it causes irritation, a mild burning sensation, tingling or even itching.

Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Tears can be inadequate and unstable for many reasons.

Dry eyes may occur if you don’t produce enough tears or if you produce poor-quality tears. This tear instability leads to inflammation and damage of the eye’s surface.

There are many reasons for tear film dysfunction, including hormone changes, autoimmune disease, inflamed eyelid glands or allergic eye disease.

86% of patients diagnosed with dry eye also exhibit symptoms of another condition known as MGB. MGB describes a blockage that inhibits the activity of your eye’s Meibomian glands. These glands secrete oil that contributes to our tears, preventing them from drying up before they can come out. The upper eyelid has about 25 to 40 individual glands, while the lower eyelid has 20 to 30. When they’re rendered inactive, your tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dry eyes. The MGB (Meibomian Glands Dysfunction) is the first cause of eye dryness due to tear evaporation.

The doctor or the optometrist will use a device called the LipiScan. It works to provide high-definition scanning capabilities so doctors can get a better view of how your glands are operating.

This examination is totally painless.

There are several solutions for remedying dry eyes:

Eyelid massage

Eyelid massage is an effective technique when practised for 10-minutes every morning and evening.

Massaging your eyelids helps them to empty the accumulated ‘meibum’ (an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eye’s tear film). It is worth noting, however, that the eyelids are fragile and it is necessary to follow the instructions of your ophthalmologist.

LipiFlow – an innovative treatment

LipiFlow technology, developed by the American company Tear Science, presents a major advance in the treatment of dry eyes.

A single session of LipiFlow treatment makes it possible to stop the need of 6 months’ worth of eyelid massages.

The application of controlled heat to the inner surface of the eyelid as well as a massage of the external surface allows the meibomian glands to start working properly again. Treatment is quick (around 10 minutes) and painless.

Scientific studies show that one session is beneficial for between 6 and 12 months.

The results of a long-term follow-up study of patients treated with LipiFlow found that 86% of patients treated with LipiFlow were still significantly improved 12 months later.

What a joy to no longer wear glasses or lenses! I am an ophthalmologist in Annecy, and I trusted my colleague completely. I quickly forget this old handicap; but appreciate being freed from this visual defect whether at work (behind the microscope), in my sports (swimming, fencing, mountain biking, skiing, paragliding, climbing, nights in a refuge…) or when travelling.

The intervention was carried out perfectly and painlessly in about 15 minutes. When I awoke, I had no pain and perfectly clear sight, which allowed me to work the next morning without glasses. Since the operation, all is well. I can drive and do sport without glasses. Thank you to Doctor Donate and team for their kindness and the quality of their care.

The surgical procedure was carried out under optimal safety and hygiene conditions and lasted very little time. I immediately rediscovered the pleasure of a clear and sharp vision both from a distance and from near. I can only recommend this surgery, which has given me visual comfort daily. I now see details that I absolutely couldn’t see with glasses (even with the best correction).

I arrived at the laser centre and had my surgery under local anaesthesia. I had no pain and returned home that afternoon. By the end of the afternoon, the pain had disappeared, and my sight was almost perfect. My only regret is that I didn’t have this intervention earlier.

Dry eye syndrome is a chronic and typically progressive condition. Depending on its cause and severity, it may not be completely curable. Click here to read more.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is blockage or some other abnormality of the meibomian glands so they don’t secrete enough oil into the tears. Because the tear film on the surface of the eye then evaporates too quickly, MGD is associated with dry eye syndrome. It also is connected with an eyelid problem called blepharitis.
