Relieve your dry eyes and experience more comfort
In the toggles below, we have provided everything you need to know about dry eye disease and how we can treat it
Eye dryness can affect anyone. It can be characterized by fluctuating blurred vision, mucus around the eyes, excessive tearing (like crying), red-eye or eye strain. Having dry eyes is sometimes painless, but most often it causes irritation, a mild burning sensation, tingling or even itching.
Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Tears can be inadequate and unstable for many reasons.
Dry eyes may occur if you don’t produce enough tears or if you produce poor-quality tears. This tear instability leads to inflammation and damage of the eye’s surface.
There are many reasons for tear film dysfunction, including hormone changes, autoimmune disease, inflamed eyelid glands or allergic eye disease.
86% of patients diagnosed with dry eye also exhibit symptoms of another condition known as MGB. MGB describes a blockage that inhibits the activity of your eye’s Meibomian glands. These glands secrete oil that contributes to our tears, preventing them from drying up before they can come out. The upper eyelid has about 25 to 40 individual glands, while the lower eyelid has 20 to 30. When they’re rendered inactive, your tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dry eyes. The MGB (Meibomian Glands Dysfunction) is the first cause of eye dryness due to tear evaporation.
The doctor or the optometrist will use a device called the LipiScan. It works to provide high-definition scanning capabilities so doctors can get a better view of how your glands are operating.
This examination is totally painless.
There are several solutions for remedying dry eyes:
Eyelid massage
Eyelid massage is an effective technique when practised for 10-minutes every morning and evening.
Massaging your eyelids helps them to empty the accumulated ‘meibum’ (an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eye’s tear film). It is worth noting, however, that the eyelids are fragile and it is necessary to follow the instructions of your ophthalmologist.
LipiFlow – an innovative treatment
LipiFlow technology, developed by the American company Tear Science, presents a major advance in the treatment of dry eyes.
A single session of LipiFlow treatment makes it possible to stop the need of 6 months’ worth of eyelid massages.
The application of controlled heat to the inner surface of the eyelid as well as a massage of the external surface allows the meibomian glands to start working properly again. Treatment is quick (around 10 minutes) and painless.
Scientific studies show that one session is beneficial for between 6 and 12 months.
The results of a long-term follow-up study of patients treated with LipiFlow found that 86% of patients treated with LipiFlow were still significantly improved 12 months later.
